Photoshoot Plan #1: Autumnal Warmth

I love fashion photography, but I rarely do photoshoots because of how expensive the equipment is, the amount of clothes that need to be purchased and my downright awkwardness in shooting in public.

So, I thought it’d be a really creative idea for me to pretend to plan for a photoshoot I may or may not potentially do in the future. It was fun experimenting with a few looks and collating a mood board together- I hope you enjoy reading through it!

Also, I have no damn idea why I’m preparing for a fall shoot when it’s 30 degrees celsius right now.

It doesn’t get any more autumnal than this y’all. Shout out to Jack Terrence Nugent for a bomb playlist and the ‘Now You See It’ YouTube Channel for suggesting it.

Get ready for a cozy musical experience fam.

Hair and Makeup Look

For the fall theme, I liked the idea of warm tones on the face, hence the contouring, bronzer and rouge blush. I loved the subtle pink and orange tones of the eyeshadow which works so well with the warm liquid lipsticks. For the hair,  I was obsessed with Bella’s hair and wanted to recreate the voluminous wavy look with slight waves, even though a voluminous head of curls (à la Selena Gomez Revival Tour ) would also be a fun look.

Look #1- Cafe

When I think of a cafe, I immediately think of study (lmao). I kept it bookworm chic with a backpack and a black textured high neck sweater paired with an orange/tan a-line skirt. To add a bit of edginess to the outfit I added thigh high boots since not a lot of walking will be done. Not gonna lie- it’s one of my favourites.

Look #2- Park

I wouldn’t normally choose a peter pan collared dress, but for the sake of fall- why not. The dark brown long sleeved cardigan and the camera bag add to the “school girl aesthetic” without being too girly. The black booties have a low heel to help with the walking and the round glasses, watch and leaf ring add elements of chicness to the outfit. I also really love the orange-red lip, which makes a statement in contrast to the dark coloured outfit.

Look #3- Market

Low heel black booties are a given when you’re  walking so there’s that. The overalls combine with the shoes to create a black base, then I simply added autumnal tones to the outfit such as a red beret, orange/tan scarf and a light brown sweater. To keep it simple, I added a few gold accents and a dark nude lipstick.

Look #4- Biking

Fun fact- I can’t ride a bicycle lol, they still look cute, though! Fall would not be complete without flannel- so a v-neck long sleeved top would be perfect as it’s relaxed yet still a little sexy. Jeans are a given when riding a bike so I chose a black distressed pair to show off the top’s plaid print. Any sneakers would do fine, so I chose converse and a backpack was a given anyway (imagine riding a bike with a tote lmao). Then, I simply added gold accents and a berry lip to add autumnal chicness to the outfit.

And that’s it! I hope you enjoyed reading the post. Have a lovely day.

French It Girls: Louise Follain and Jeanne Damas

Louise Follain

Note: I’m currently aware that one of the photos is Louise Damas. Apologies!

Currently inspired by French fashion due to Paris Fashion Week. So, in the most Helen way possible, I decided to put together two collages of my favourite it girls in fashion right now, in particular Parisian fashion. There is something I love about these two ladies, their liveliness, quirkiness and appreciation of retro and minimalist fashion is something I too adore. Also on a side note, aren’t these photos amazing? I may be an amateur photographer, but seeing some of these photos makes me wish I was the one who took them/wishes I was as photogenic as these ladies. *swoons*

Ahh the horrifying realization that my end of year exams (HSC) are looming closer and closer continues to tear apart my mentality. Luckily these posts ensure I don’t die out of creativity. Alas, have a lovely night and I’ll see you next time.

June Inspiration

Twas a tiresome night in June, my limp warm body stationary and fixed on my bed, smothered beneath the blankets. My mind was wandering, somewhere. Here’s to my wanderlust day in June.

Ludwig Göransson and Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) holding hands. Love their work on Camp and Because the Internet. They look so adorable and retro in this photo, love it.

Deanna Templeton’s work is refreshing and very clever, her artsy photography of skinny dipping excels my expectations. The subjects look so graceful and natural, these were two of the shots I selected due to most shots being NSFW. My friend Lesley (her blog is here ) summed my thoughts up well, “The body doesn’t always have to be sexualised” she said. I agreed of course, after all, Nudity doesn’t always equate to sexualisation!

490tx’s Photography

I really love 490tx’s work, his black and white photos look so gloomy and classic. I saw this one while scrolling through instagram and I must say, it’s quite funny (it was champagne that she dropped on her jeans) and reignited the beauty in capturing accidents.

Kylie Jenner’s Instagram

Kylie is currently signed to Puma  and this shot is perfect. The grunge, sportswear and chic bob, Puma is doing it right!

I have this thing of tearing up all the time,  not from sadness, but because I wipe my eyes too many times, makeup irritation or because I’m tired. I looked in the mirror and saw this face and I looked just like someone punched me in the face lmao. However, it did look really dramatic and strangely cool (no this is not an everyday look).

Emily Ratajkowski looking sexy while eating cake. Goals I tell you.

I’ve just been introduced to psychedelic rock by my new favourite band, Tame Impala (psst, my suggestions are ‘the Less I Know the Better’ and ‘New Person Same Old Mistakes’). The 70’s have been a major inspiration since then and the joy and retro feel of these photos is something I’d like to recreate in my own work. Really loving the contrast of the gloomy black and white filters and the warm toned photos, however interestingly both depict intense emotions.

What has inspired you lately?

Favourite Shots in Spring 2015

Lol, I nearly forgot.

These posts are so infrequent, after all I only get to write them each season! Oh well, maybe it’s a sign to take a photography trip somewhere haha.
Overall, this season was difficult to capture. Exams, commitments, projects were galore and it was hard to observe the beauty of nature birthing when you’re stressing about that English short story due the next day. However despite the lack of photos I had produced from my inspiration lacking brain, I had learnt one very important lesson this season. The art of editing. No more will I scroll through Instagram and increase the brightness. Those days were gone! Now comes VSCO Cam (it’s here to stay), and the importance of not only brightness, but contrast, saturation, shadows and highlights. I also experimented with coloured tints to really accentuate a feature of a photo.
Therefore, working with what I have, these were a few (I was underestimating myself- when I started searching for my spring photos I realised there was quite a considerable sum lmao) of my favourite photos.
I underestimated myself, I know I know. Overall I was impressed. Lack of nature photos I agree, but I love the use of saturation to really brighten up those lovely daisies and coloured walls etc. Plenty of high brightness and highlights, but I love the play of shadows and lighting that really added that extra oomph to the shots. AND A LOT OF FOOD SHOTS. I’m trying to avoid being that person but come on. If you’re eating something healthy isn’t it practically an excuse in itself? *quickly dashes to cover a curtain above the ice cream*
I doubt I’ll be taking a lot of summer related photos this year (cue cliché donut floaties, pool side photos, a day at the beach candid shots, a pair of distressed acid-wash high-waisted denim shorts worn on some seriously tanned legs) because I’m such an antisocial person who doesn’t want to bathe in the humidity :’D Oh well, I’ll try to enjoy summer break somehow. Enjoy your afternoon!

What was your favourite shot? What photos did you take the most this spring? (food, flowers, architecture, people?)

I was researching photos for my ‘How to Deal with a Bad Day’ post when I was distracted by a ‘flower child’ esque photo (below), of a girl gracefully lying down on a white bed, adorned with a gorgeous white flower crown while wearing a teal pair of shorts and a lace top. Everything was perfect, the lighting, the outfit, the relaxing tone and the pose. I’ve always been into photos like these, when they capture a natural effortless moment with an outfit that seamlessly blends with the tone of its surroundings. I haven’t talked about photography in a while now (I really hope I can take a photo trip soon) so this is a perfect opportunity to showcase my favourite shots from other photographers and also inspirational spring looks 🙂
Note: these photos are not mine.
This one speaks for itself. Don’t you love it when a lot of petals fall on the ground? I love how it creates something like Mother Nature’s blanket, I just want to lie on the ground and create petal angels! The pink bike adds a cute touch to the photo as well.

What a gorgeous shot, I love how the flowers naturally lead your eye to the focal point- this lovely lady admiring the very same daisies. It’s also meaningful how she’s not looking at the camera directly, but chooses to close her eyes and look away, like she’s enchanted in the moment and is absorbing the calming energy radiating from her surroundings. So *0*

This is a very unique yet interesting use of flowers. Rather than  the flowers just placed on her head, this was placed all over her face, around her wispy like hair. The orange filter gives the photo such a warm dreamy quality and she looks as if she’s blindly in love or as if all she can see is natural beauty. 10/10 yess.

Daisies adorably lined up in a column? Check. Fun with shadows? Check. High Saturation? Mother freaking CHECK. The saturation really brings out the centres of the daisies, and the shadows add a dark grunge element to the photo. Literally eye heaven.

Another coffee photo, with an element of grunge and those beautiful lavender flowers (also don’t forget the leaves). I love the centering of everything and I couldn’t say no, this was the best coffee photo I’ve ever seen by far! GOALS.

The messy wavy ‘bronde’ hair, the falling petals and the long white dress is just PERFECT. These are one of my favourite ‘in the moment’ photos, captured flawlessly. Every thing in this photo exemplifies pure grace, from the fluttery dress to her relaxed twirling arms. This will always be one of my faves.

Looks just like a mermaid! To me it doesn’t give a full summer vibe, but instead gives off a spring aesthetic for some reason. Is it because of the pastel pink hair or the clear water? I have no idea. But, it reminds me of a mermaid or a particular moment where I loved to take baths when I was a little, and I would always admire the ripples and the play of reflections in the clear water. So cool.

The extreme bright lighting accentuates the transparency of her pink tulle dress and it works SO well. This photo REALLY takes advantage of the sun, and the sun glare on the right adds such a beautiful touch. The hedges and the red flats she’s holding gives such a cutesy aesthetic. I wish I took this photo, damn it’s perfect!

The cut outs on the back of this dress looks amazing! The play of shapes adds an interesting feature on this romantic dress, giving off an effortless boho vibe. Her frizzy hair combined with the purple, yellow and green flower crown give off a flower child vibe and I just love it. The sun glare is also gorgeous too, makes me feel like I should go to a hippie festival of some sort! (Ahem Coachella maybe?)

Don’t these flowers look so cute! I love the little leaves below the petals, like the full skirt of a ballerina dress! The backdrop is just as adorable, reminds me of a love letter or some kind, utterly romantic and youthful.

Grunge meets drop dead wondrously gorgeous. Those dark passionate coloured leaves contrasts well with the delicate romantic flowers. The photography is simple but it works, however it’s hard to argue that Mother Nature won this round.

Bokeh is my obsession, so flowers paired with bokeh was a NO BRAINER. I have fond memories of this type of flowers. I used to take long walks with my mum, and she called them ‘paper’ flowers because of its petals. They’re so unique and I’ve always had a little space in my heart for them. Plus I love the harmony between man made and nature!
And that’s it! Hoped you liked my Spring Inspo, and enjoyed my photography commentary. Again I found these photos on google images so all credit goes to the photographers, I’m just sharing my love for these pieces of art! Thanks again for reading!
